EPA's McCarthy: Climate science debate 'got away from us'

EPA's top air official is dismayed by the traction climate science deniers have gotten on Capitol Hill and in public debate, and she thinks it's time for environmental advocates to rethink their message.

“I think the biggest disappointment we have is just how badly we have let the arguments about the science get away from us and allowed science climate science deniers to get the upper hand here,” EPA air chief Gina McCarthy said Monday in an interview with WNYC radio.

Isn't it weird when tyrants fail, it has the same the same ring, they got the "upper hand".

House Republicans have made attacking EPA climate rules one of their top environmental priorities since taking over the chamber this year, although they face hurdles in the Senate and the White House. The House passed a stand-alone bill in April to upend climate rules and the House Appropriations Committee last week approved a 2012 spending bill with language blocking the agency from regulating greenhouse gases from stationary sources.

But McCarthy said Monday that her disappointment goes beyond efforts on Capitol Hill to handcuff her agency to the way climate science is perceived by the public.

“I don't think it's just disappointing in what we're seeing with Congress and appropriations and bills trying to limit our ability to move forward on reasonable greenhouse gas rules, but it's disappointing to read the polls and to understand just how confused people have become over the past two years on what we believe to be an absolutely clear scientific record,” she said.

“I think it's been a very concerted campaign effort ... and environmental advocates everywhere need to rethink how we again make the science message clear to everyday Americans.”

"This is a smoking gun, saying that your findings were political, not scientific" - Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.)




Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) today exposed a "smoking gun" White House memo to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The memo warns that regulation of small CO2 emitters will have "serious economic consequences" for businesses and the overall economy.

Barrasso produced the memo while questioning EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson during the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee budget hearing.

"I received a memo this morning, that's marked ‘Deliberative: Attorney-Client Privilege'. In this memo Counsel for the White House repeatedly, repeatedly suggests a lack of scientific support for this proposed finding. This is a smoking gun, saying that your findings were political and not scientific", Barrasso said.

The EPA has failed to release the memo and has ignored the advice.

The environmental agency is under order from the Supreme Court to make a determination whether carbon dioxide is a pollutant that endangers public health and welfare, an order that the Bush administration essentially ignored despite near-unanimous belief among agency experts that research points inexorably to such a finding.

While blatantly false, the Supreme Court said that the EPA 'can' regulate CO2, it did not say it 'must' regulate CO2. Read the ruling here, it's numbered 05-1120 in pdf form. In fact, the Supreme Court said the EPA could defer judgment, because the science is complex. The science wizards on the Supreme Court also must know how photosynthesis and cellular respiration works.

So does this mean the EPA must rid the atmosphere of all CO2? Why not? Who determines how much is too much? What the Supreme Court did was declare CO2 a pollutant, which it is not. Carbon life forms would cease to exist on Earth without atmospheric CO2.

Now we have a Fascists as President, so CO2 must be controlled, because don't you all understand, it's destroying the planet. Which is total complete bunk. CO2 has been as much as 10 times what it is today, and lookey here, the planet is still here, so are humans, the plants and animals as well.

The coming ice age, that is going to be a different matter. The issue with the next ice age is when, not if.
