I put up a post the other day about the riots in one London area called Tottenham. A man from the area had been shot by police, but police are claiming an exchange of gunfire took place which, at least in this country, would justify deadly force by the police.

In any case, it seemed like a regional situation which was likely to die dow after one bad night. Now it seems that assumption was very, very wrong. Riots seem to have spread throughout various parts of London. Here’s video of a group of street thugs charging the police and forcing them to back away:

Fact is -- governments can disarm you, but governments cannot protect you. Hence our founders gave Americans the Second Amendment.

Risky Behavior

God and guns are what our country was founded upon. Any new history student of the Revolutionary period quickly learns that. They are what keep us strong, or what should keep us strong. They are there for our defense, personal, others, and State.

If you own guns, smoke, eat too much, drive powerful cars, ride motorcycles, or engage in other government defined risky behavior, you will have to pay more for your health insurance. Gun related violence is a public health problem? More stupid things have been said but this has a purpose, disarming you.

More than a decade after Congress cut funding for firearms research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), another federal health agency has been spending millions of dollars to study such topics as whether teenagers who carry firearms run a different risk of getting shot compared with suffering other sorts of injuries.

The Second Amendment is not about duck hunting, it's about preventing America from being taken over by tyrants, elected or otherwise. Read the federalist papers.

Bloomberg Flames Out

Enumerated rights have a higher threshold for regulating and limiting than do rights emanated from the Constitution's penumbra. In the Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled the Second Amendment protected the individuals right to arms.

Without comment, the justices decided not to review a ruling by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, which declared on April 30 that federal law protected the manufacturers from such suits.

The appeals court had overturned a decision by Judge Jack B. Weinstein of Federal District Court in Brooklyn, who ruled in 2005 that the suit could proceed despite protests by gun makers like Beretta U.S.A., Browning Arms, Colt Manufacturing, Glock and Smith & Wesson. The gun companies had complained that a federal law passed just two months earlier shielded them from such suits.

How The Second Amendment Was Won

Even if you are concerned for your gun rights, make time to read Brian Doherty's history of the Heller case. It gives a quick run-down of how the case came to be and the numerous near-misses it had along the way.

Particularly troubling is how the NRA played an obstructionist role in an effort to block Heller in the early stages, out of apparent fear that the time wasn't right for a Second Amendment challenge.

The Heller case quickly found a powerful opponent in the
National Rifle Association. This surprises nearly every layman I
discuss the case with, most of whom assume the NRA was behind the
lawsuit in the first place. The Parker lawyers received
backroom visits from allies of the NRA before their case was filed,
discouraging them from going forward. The Supreme Court (which still
had Sandra Day O’Conner back then) would not reliably deliver a
victory, they argued, and an authoritative statement from the Supremes
that the Second Amendment did not protect an individual right could
prove devastating to the long-term cause.

Concluding, Doherty says:

The Heller case was a prime example of how calm, dedicated,
and strategic thinking on the part of crusaders for smaller government
can achieve real and (probably) lasting victories. Fighting against
even those who should have been their staunchest allies, Levy and his
team of libertarian lawyers watched the zeitgeist, crafted a smart
(though risky) strategy, and won.

An excellent book.

You have to wonder if there was some self interest in keeping a cloud over the second amendment issue for NRA fund raising purposes. Don't know, but it is interesting how the NRA may have nearly lost the second amendment, by not vigorously pursuing in court it's defense. Four Justices did after all, vote against what is clearly an enumerated right in the Bill of Rights.
