Rollover Pass, Texas After Ike

A longtime favorite fishing spot taken, for now, by Ike ... Hopefully it will come back.

This areal photo was taken above the Rollover Pass, Gilchrist TX, after hurricane Ike. Rollover Pass was one of my favorite fishing spots when we lived in the Galveston area many years ago. It was a beautiful area to swim and fish.

I doubt the park is still there, nor the sign ...

Trivia: The pass is named for the practice of ship captains from the days of Spanish rule through prohibition, who, to avoid the Galveston customs station, rolled barrels of import or export merchandise over that part of the peninsula. (Handbook of Texas Online)

The pass was opened in 1955 by the Texas Game and Fish Commission to help state fish and wildlife resources and improve the local fishing conditions in the bay. Fish in and around the pass, Trout, Redfish, Flounder, Croaker and many more. Popping cork with live shrimp or jigs were my favorite baits. We liked to wade off the beach on an outgoing tide, for the fish that hung on the sides of the pass. Currents were very strong, wear a life jacket.

Aerial view, the way it was:

Hi, my name is Josette and I spent many a summer and early fall...hell, I spend winters there too...at Rollover. I am so hurt that it's gone. The last I heard from my dad, who moved away from there but still tries to go fishing in that area all the time, is that the pass will be filled in and the park is now closed. This was as of two weeks ago. I hope that isn't the case. I moved to New York after this storm destroyed my two homes and a car, and I miss that area badly. If you want to keep in touch about it with someone who has the inside on this, email me at josette_walston@yahoo.com. Thanks.

I just came across this article and just wanted to state that Rollover Pass is still open and has been since Hurricane Ike. There hasn't been any confirmation Rollover Pass will be closed. The Army Corps of Engineers has to approved and that has not happened. So keep enjoying fishing at the Pass! :)
