Chile's Chaitén Volcano Steps It Up

Thar she blows ... Image taken by MODIS on May 5, 2008.

Chile's Chaitén volcano spewed lava and blasted ash 20 kilometres(About 12 miles) into the sky in another violent eruption today. The intensity is increasing and the frequency of eruption events is not abating.

That has prompted officials to order an emergency total evacuation of the nearby area. More than 4,000 people have already fled. The governor of Palena province, Fernando Aguilar, has now ordered the remain 280 residents to leave immediately.

The long-dormant volcano, which began erupting five days ago, has already sent a column of ash streaming across the narrow southern stretch of the continent and over the Atlantic.

The Washington Post has an AP slide show here.

No word yet if this is a 'throat clearing' eruption with the big event to follow. Pressure has been building for thousands of years, best to stand back, way back. Has man figured out how to control volcanoes yet?
