Did you know that “bin Laden” is the vice president of the United States, or that the Civil War led to America’s independence? How about that Canada’s a state?
Well, that’s what some local students at (what appears to be) a Washington state high school think. In a video that’s probably a few hours from going viral, a young man decided to question classmates for a video called “Lunch Scholars.” It is anything but scholarly. HuffPo explains:

Austin, an intrepid young student-reporter, embarks on the noble mission of answering the question, “How much basic knowledge do American high school students really have?” The answer, however, may not be exactly what you want to hear.
“Do you know the vice president of the United States?” Austin asks.
“I don‘t know who it it’s, it’s, it’s somebody….Bin Ladin,” one student responds.
The video continues in similar fashion, asking everything from, “In what war did America gain independence?” (which no one answered correctly without a hint) to “What countries border America?”

By the way, one student says there are 51 states. Maybe he is friends with the girl who thinks Canada is one of them.
HuffPo may have said it best: “If there was ever a movie to make you laugh to keep from crying, it’s this one.”

Uh OH, Our Flip-Flop: Mittens Romney Told Catholic Hospitals to Administer Abortion Pills

A defining moment in Mitt Romney's post-pro-life-conversion political career came in his third year as governor of Massachusetts, when he decided Catholic hospitals would be required under his interpretation of a new state law to give rape victims a drug that can induce abortions.

Romney announced this decision — saying it was the "right thing for hospitals" to do — just two days after he had taken the opposite position.

The story begins in 1975, when Massachusetts enacted a law that said, "No privately controlled hospital .. shall be required to permit any patient to have an abortion ... or to furnish contraceptive devices or information to such patient ... when said services or referrals are contrary to the religious or moral principles of said hospital ... ."

Twenty-seven years later, when Romney was running for governor, he filled out a questionnaire for NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. It said: "Emergency contraception does not cause abortion. Rather, it prevents pregnancy from occurring. Will you support efforts to increase access to emergency contraception?"

Romney said: "Yes."

The next year, the Massachusetts legislature considered an "emergency contraception" mandate. It would have allowed pharmacists to sell Plan B — an abortifacient — without a prescription and without parental consent. It also would have required all hospitals to inform rape victims of the availability of such "emergency contraceptives" and provide them to the rape victim if she wanted them even when they would cause an abortion.

Romney on Wednesday told CNN, "I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there." After showing that, Muir then played a video montage of "Mitt's moments." The clips included, "Corporations are people, my friends. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. I'll tell you what, $10,000 bucks? $10,000 bet? I'm not concerned about the very poor."

Setting up the poor comment, Muir previewed, "When answering a question about a new poll showing more voters think that President Obama understands the needs of average Americans than Governor Romney does, the governor answered this way."

Seconds after showing Romney saying, "We have a safety net there. If it needs repair, I'll fix it," Muir added, "But when pressed about how this sounded-" and then played the remark again.

With help from ABC, it hardly seems that the Democratic National Committee needs to work very hard on commercials.

Global Cooling Coming? Archibald uses solar and surface data to predict 4.9°C fall (!)

Everybody knows we are currently in an interglacial period, and the next ice age, the real on, is coming due.

David Archibald, polymath, makes a bold prediction that temperatures are about to dive sharply (in the decadal sense). He took the forgotten correlation that as solar cycles lengthen and weaken, the world gets cooler. He refined it into a predictive tool, tested it and published in 2007. His paper has been expanded on recently by Prof Solheim in Norway, who predicts a 1.5°C drop in Central Norway over the next ten years.

Our knowledge of they solar dynamo is improving, and David adds the predicted solar activity ’til 2040 to the analysis. Normal solar cycles are 11 years long, but the current one (cycle 24) is shaping up to be 17 years (unusually long), and using historical data from the US, David predicts a 2.1°C decline over Solar Cycle 24 followed by a further 2.8°C over Solar Cycle 25. That adds up to a whopping 4.9°C fall in temperate latitudes over the next 20 years. We can only hope he’s wrong. As David says ” The center of the Corn Belt, now in Iowa, will move south to Kansas.”

He also predicts continuing drought in Africa for another 14 years, with droughts likely in South America too.

If he’s right, it’s awful and excellent at the same time. Cold hurts, but wouldn’t it be something if we understood our climate well enough to plan ahead?

“I think he knows pretty well that the H-1B is an issue because — it’s kind of like the Occupy movement — big corporations are putting up the money to get the visas” and choosing lower-paid foreign workers over domestic ones, Wedel said. “I don’t think what he was telling me was true, and I think he knew it, and that’s why he offered to take my husband’s resume,” she said, adding that her husband has kept it updated.

Safety Dance by Men Without Hats

The new wave synth pop collective Men Without Hats were formed in 1980 by brothers Ivan and Stefan Doroschuk. Ivan was the leader of the group, writing the majority of the songs and providing the lead vocals; Stefan was the guitarist; and other members changed frequently throughout the course of the group's career. They independently released their debut EP, Folk of the '80s, in 1980; it was reissued the following year by Stiff in Britain. During 1982, the band consisted of Ivan, Stefan, another brother Colin Doroschuk (keyboards), along with drummer Allan McCarthy; this is the lineup that recorded Men Without Hats' 1982 debut album, Rhythm of Youth. Taken from their debut, the single "The Safety Dance" became a major hit, peaking on the American charts at number three in 1983. Driven by an insistent three-chord synthesizer riff, the song was one of the biggest synth pop hits of the new wave era. The group wasn't able to exploit its success, however. Folk of the '80s (Part III) stalled at number 127 on the charts in America and made even less of an impact in other parts of the world. Thanks to the minor-hit title track, 1987's Pop Goes the World was a bigger success, yet it didn't recapture the audience their first album had gained. Released two years later, The Adventures of Women & Men Without Hate in the 21st Century failed to chart, as did its follow-up, 1991's Sideways. The two albums' lack of success effectively put an end to Men Without Hats' career.

High-tech Israeli drone crashes on test flight

A long-range Israeli drone capable of surveillance and bombing missions over Iran crashed Sunday near an Israeli air base during a test flight.

The Heron TP unmanned aircraft can stay aloft for 40 hours and has a range of 4,600 miles, the Israeli air force said. The distance between Iran and Israel is about 1,000 miles.

Gen. Ido Nehushtan, commander of the Israeli air force, said new technology on the drone was being tested when the aircraft crashed into an orchard near the Tel Nof air base outside Rehovot.

A preliminary investigation indicated that human error and a technical malfunction contributed to the accident, the air force said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

According to military sources, a wing that fell off the drone had been fitted with a highly advanced navigational device that might have interfered with the aircraft’s other flight systems.

The Israeli military’s most advanced drone, the Heron TP has a wingspan of 85 feet, nearly that of a Boeing 737, and a payload capacity of 2,200 pounds.

The drone has platforms for surveillance equipment and for firing rockets, and can be used in a variety of mission such as aerial refueling, jamming communications and relaying ground control in Israel to manned aircraft over a distant target.

Israeli officials reportedly have been considering a military strike on Iran to prevent the Islamic republic from making an atomic weapon, and the Heron TP, which soars as high as 40,000 feet, would likely play a key role in an attack.

According to press accounts, the drone was used in a 2009 airstrike in Sudan against a Gaza-bound convoy carrying Iranian arms destined for the Hamas militant group.

Author Anna David on retro advice for the modern women and why the “rise” of the single women isn’t all it’s chalked up to be.

In 2009, when Anna David set out to follow the advice of 60s icon—and Cosmopolitan editor—Helen Gurley Brown’s legendary book Sex And the Single Girl, she did so with one thing in mind: to land herself a husband.

Author Anna David on retro advice for the modern women and why the “rise” of the single women isn’t all it’s chalked up to be.

In 2009, when Anna David set out to follow the advice of 60s icon—and Cosmopolitan editor—Helen Gurley Brown’s legendary book Sex And the Single Girl, she did so with one thing in mind: to land herself a husband.

Gurley Brown’s advice, which ranged from shallow (revamping her wardrobe and apartment) to character-building (travelling solo and learning how to cook), seemed just what she need to become the woman she dreams she should be: the one with the high-earning job, the perfect man and the two and a half kids. “I thought, ’I’m going to be so perfect, I’m definitely going to attract the perfect man,’” she says. “And that didn’t happen.”

Instead, and as is chronicled in David’s memoir-meets-self-helpish Falling For Me, something much more remarkable happened: at 41 and single, Anna David grew up.

It should come as no surprise to ForbesWoman readers that Single Women are on the rise as the most buzzed-about demographic for marketers, media members and economists. David’s book rides that wave with all the bells and whistles; its cover bears the tag line: “How I hung curtains, learned to cook, traveled to Seville and fell in love.”

It’s a cultural moment that’s lasted several years and it looks as if it’s here to stay. We all point to Hanna Rosin’s “The End of Men” and Kate Bolick’s “All The Single Ladies,” both published by the Atlantic, and more recently Janelle Nanos’ “Single By Choice,” but the message, by now, is clear. As a result of a perfect storm of social and economic reasons, women are waiting longer and longer to get married, leaving a cohort of upwardly mobile, educated, single, childless and—at least we’re meant to believe—confident women.

Marketers (who love to throw around the whole “women control 80% of consumer spending” number) have responded gleefully with targeted campaigns, as laid out by both the New York Times and HuffPo in recent weeks. You know, the Citibank ad featuring a mountain climbing enthusiast opting to climb a rock rather than bejewel her finger with one. Or the Honda CRV spot in which a woman tears through her “to-do” list before she says “I Do.”

The trouble is, even with all this attention, is that while the idealized woman spun out by the media is strong, confident and oh-so-pleased with herself, real life singles still have much to struggle with. David takes a different tact than the Rosins of the world:

“I think it’s good that single women are seeing more and more attention,” she told me recently while in town from Los Angeles on a NYC book tour, “But there’s still so much misunderstanding about it.” Despite being told that, as a singleton, she was a part of a new and exciting demographic, David concedes she still felt incomplete, saying “Somehow I internalized that I am single, and so I’m therefore half a person.” As a result, all through her twenties and into her thirties, David says she skimped on critical life steps: “I never took the time to make [my apartment] a space I loved because subconsciously—and it kills me to say this—I was just waiting for a man to come along so our lives would start.”

With no man, no kids and no prescribed life path, David posits that the path is more challenging than it was for the women that came before us. Why? It just might be that we’re crippled by choices. “What has happened is this,” she says. “My mother’s generation went from parent’s house to husband’s house. They got their plate wear from their wedding registry and they learned to cook because suddenly there’s a man and a kid. They had no choice.”

In contrast, today’s twenty- and thirty-something women have more choices than ever before. The choice to marry or not marry. The choice to become teachers, doctors, lawyers or CIA agents. The choice to climb the corporate ladder or travel the world building medical clinics in blighted countries. The choice to have children or have abortions. The choice to grocery shop and—gasp!—learn to cook, or to order take-out every night.

There’s just something easier, David says, without all that choice.

Before you jump down David’s throat though, be aware that she’s ready for the criticism. A September essay she wrote for HuffPo, titled “Why Women Had It Better In The Sixties,” took major heat (and over 600 comments) for being anti-feminist, offensive, clueless and ungrateful. “Listen,” says David, “I am grateful for the work that the Gloria Steinems and the Helen Gurley Browns have done. But there’s this idea out there that the work has been done and that modern women are just reaping all of the benefits. I’m grateful for the choices I’ve been given, but it remains that one of the after-effect of women’s lib is that there are so many choices that we all feel like we’ve made the wrong ones.”

David’s choices, like many of her peers, led her down a path that left her in her late thirties, living solo in Manhattan with a toolset she didn’t know how to use and fresh out of a relationship with a married man when she began the project of following the advice of Gurley Brown’s 1962 Sex And The Single Girl. Gurley Brown herself didn’t marry until she was 39, and extols the notion that one’s single years are a time of freedom (and, conversely, that husbands are “for the worst years of your life”). The lessons David learned wrenched her from what she calls delayed adulthood, an epidemic seen not only in single women but much-hyped in the dialogue around single men. Under Gurley Brown’s retro tutelage, David learned to cook (well, a little) and traded her sweatpants for clothes that fit. She started taking vitamins and learned that not being good at something is not a valid reason for not doing it (A.K.A., she learned to roller blade). She traveled to Seville and overcame a life-long fear of water. But more importantly she stopped waiting for her life to begin.

Challenging Obama, Including Illegal Aliens In US Census

Are you aware that the U.S. Census Bureau counts illegal aliens when determining how many seats in Congress a state should receive? That means states with large illegal alien populations are now receiving a disproportionate amount of seats in Congress and therefore more power in establishing national policy.

Judicial Watch is now involved in a high-stakes legal campaign to put a stop to this unconstitutional policy.

Recently, we filed an amicus curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the State of Louisiana challenging the current federal policy in which “unlawfully present aliens” were counted in the 2010 Census (Louisiana v. Bryson).

The government used these census numbers to reapportion seats in the House of Representatives and, as a result, the State of Louisiana lost a House seat to which it was entitled. Louisiana is asking that the Supreme Court order the federal government to recalculate the 2010 apportionment of House seats based upon legal residents as the U.S. Constitution requires.

Judicial Watch, in partnership with the Allied Educational Foundation (AEF), filed the brief on January 13, 2012, in a lawsuit filed by the State of Louisiana against John Bryson, U.S. Secretary of Commerce; Robert Groves, Director of the U.S. Census Bureau; and Karen Lehman Hass, Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Here’s a brief excerpt from our amicus:

Amici are concerned about the failure to enforce the nation’s immigration laws and the corrosive effect of this failure on our institutions and the rule of law. Among the problems caused by this failure is a redistribution of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives to States with large populations of unlawfully present aliens.

Amici respectfully submit that neither Article I Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, the Fourteenth Amendment, or any other provision of the Constitution authorize or permit the inclusion of unlawfully present aliens in the apportionment process. As a result, this case raises issues critical not just to Louisiana, but to every State, every American citizen, and our federal system of government.

Judicial Watch argues that, due to this Census Bureau policy, at least five states will lose House seats to which they are entitled.

For example, based upon the Census Bureau’s calculation, Louisiana is being allocated only six House seats, as opposed to the seven that it would have been apportioned, were it not for the inclusion of illegal aliens and “non-immigrant foreign nationals,” which encompasses holders of student visas and guest workers. The brief also notes that the “apportionment, in turn, determines the apportionment of electors in the Electoral College for the next three presidential elections.”

It is the contention of the State of Louisiana, Judicial Watch, and AEF that “the policy of counting unlawfully present aliens in the nation’s decennial census is unconstitutional and undermines both our federal system of government and our democratic institutions,” and is the “direct result of the failure to enforce our nation’s immigration laws.”

In other words, the U.S. Census is distorting the democratic process.

And the problem is only going to get worse considering the Obama administration’s hostility to enforcing illegal immigration laws, which is causing greater numbers of illegal aliens to flood into the country. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi who's fighting to repeal ObamaCare appeared on Greta, tonight, defending RomneyCare. She says Romney’s health care plan is not the same as ObamaCare and, in fact, Romney's plan reduces costs. She goes on to say that Romney wants all states to impose similar laws (including mandates) and that she and is all for it.

She went on to explain that she's going to be on Romney’s Health Care Advisory Team when he’s president!

What this means is that while Romney may say he wants to repeal ObamaCare, he actually agrees with it. He believes that RomneyCare, ie, ObamaCare is a model health care plan and all states should impose similar plans.

RomneyCare and ObamaCare are the same thing. The only difference is that Romney's was imposed at the state level where Obama's was imposed nationally.

So Romney and his co-conspirators in the GOP establishment are now planning a National Healthcare Task Force to impose top-down government run national healthcare on all 50 states???

After years of trying to break America, Jamie Oliver has finally made his mark by persuading one of the biggest U.S fast food chains in the world to change their burger recipe.

McDonald's have altered the ingredients after the Naked Chef forced them to remove a processed food type that he labelled 'pink slime'.

Food activist Oliver was shocked when he learned that ammonium hydroxide was being used by McDonald's to convert fatty beef offcuts into a beef filler for its burgers in the USA.

The filler product made headlines after Jamie Oliver denounced it on his show, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.

'Basically, we’re taking a product that would be sold at the cheapest form for dogs and after this process we can give it to humans' said the TV chef.

Jamie showed American audiences the raw 'pink slime' produced in the ammonium hydroxide process used by producers named Beef Products Inc (BPI).

'Pink slime' has never been used in McDonald's beef patties in the UK and Ireland which source their meat from farmers within the two countries.

Now after months of campaigning on his hit US television show McDonald's have admitted defeat and the fast food giant has abandoned the beef filler from its burger patties.

US Department of Agriculture microbiologist Geral Zirnstein agreed with Jamie that ammonium hydroxide agent should be banned.

He said: 'I do not consider the stuff to be ground beef and I consider allowing it in ground beef to be a form of fraudulent labelling.'

The defiant chef is pleased at the decision by McDonald's stop using the ammonium hydroxide processes meat.

He said: 'Why would any sensible human being want to put ammonia-filled meat into their children's mouths?

'The great American public needs to urgently understand what their food industry is doing.'

'The decision to remove BPI products from the McDonald's system was not related to any particular event but rather to support our effort to align our global beef raw material standards.

'McDonald's complies with all government requirements and food safety regulations.

'Furthermore, we have our own food safety measures and standards in place throughout the entire supply chain to ensure that we serve safe, high quality food to every customer, every time they visit our restaurants.'

Two other chains Burger King and Taco Bell have earlier bowed to pressure and removed ammonium hydroxide processed ingredients from their products.

Nobody from Beef products Inc was available for comment.

Clearly coming from South Carolina where the front runner changed yet again, this debate will have some serious implications heading into Florida. Ron Paul and Rick Santorum would need to basically win Florida to build any momentum moving forward and avoid this becoming a two-man race between Romney and Gingrich.

The layoffs were announced internally earlier this month and become effective on Monday, according to the New York Post.

It is expected to impact workers at nearly all of the aging chain’s 1,200 stores across the U.S., in many cases hitting dozens of workers at a single location, according to the report.
A company spokeswoman said the layoffs will impact temporary seasonal workers who had helped with the re-ticketing of merchandise, but unidentified sources told the Post the axe will also hit long-time employees.

"As planned, we held over some seasonal holiday hires to help us with the re-ticketing of merchandise," spokeswoman Sarah Keller said in an e-mail to FOX Business. "As this project comes to a close over the next several weeks, the temporary employment of these seasonal hires will come to an end."

The protest quickly caught the attention of Net users across America and prompted a frenzy of media coverage and a flood of calls to lawmakers, while exacerbating the divide between Silicon Valley and Hollywood over the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the PROTECT IP Act in the Senate.

At the same time, signs pointed to a possible political shift on Capitol Hill. The latest to withdraw support was Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), once a co-sponsor of PIPA, who said Wednesday he has heard “legitimate concerns” since the bill cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee last year.

Rubio isn’t alone in defecting: Before the Internet protest even began, Arizona Republican Rep. Ben Quayle pulled his support of the House’s anti-piracy measure. And as Wikipedia, Reddit and other websites went dark, a spokesman for GOP Rep. Lee Terry told a local Nebraska newspaper that the congressman would withdraw his backing too.

So far near 8,000 websites have joined the protest, with various forms pf blackouts.

Montana farmers have filed a class action suit against former New Jersey governor Jon Corzine, charging that the failed financial firm run by Corzine stole millions from their accounts to pay off its spiraling debts, and that Corzine's "single-minded obsession" with making MF Global a big player on Wall Street led to the firm's collapse.

MF Global's clients included 38,000 wheat farmers, cattle ranchers and others who "hedged" their crop prices by placing millions in MF Global accounts. Those accounts were supposed to be "segregated and secure," according to the federal suit, meaning MF Global could not draw on those funds.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of all 38,000 customers, alleges that when MF Global made a series of bad investments -- notably in European debt -- it began "siphoning funds withdrawn from segregated client accounts" to cover its debts.

"This is a suit by the real victims of MF Global," said plaintiff's attorney Mark Baker of the law firm Anderson, Baker & Swanson. "The missing funds were not investments in MF Global, or loans to MF Global, but rather the customer's own money as collateral to guaranty their contracts. They were not to be used by others – let alone their own broker – to speculate on risky and exotic securities."

Once again Sarah Palin had harsh words for Michele Bachmann last night after the Iowa caucuses. But she was supportive of Mitt Romney and Ron Paul.

“I personally can’t see how it’s going to do a whole lot of good in many more response along the way,” Sarah Palin opined about the possibility of Michele Bachmann staying in the race and not dropping out if she finishes poorly in Iowa.
“Maybe not New Hampshire — quit by then — maybe not South Carolina or Florida, but down the road, unless, you know, something really turns around for her I don’t see a way to progress her candidacy to become the top-tier candidate,” Palin said.
“I’m not saying that to disparage her personally so people can quit the shots already that I’ve taken just because I’ve voice had my opinion. She’s got good things to offer. She’s done a great job. I am proud of her and I think she’s going to be back in the House of Representatives and we’re going be thankful for her being there,” she finished.

Sarah also defended Ron Paul and his supporters.
